Understanding Green Street Design: Evidence from Three Cases in the U.S.

World cities need more green areas to promote social, economic, and environmental well-being; the problem, however, is that space available for infrastructure (GI) within built environment limited. Finding empty, free, or underutilized spaces be repurposed GI has been a challenge. Streets are public, numerous, evenly distributed, being desirable place fulfill this requirement. However, they also heavily regulated public spaces, where design standardized, ruled by codes manuals. Some in US have implemented an increasing number of streets (green infrastructures rights-of-way with purposes), because stormwater management federal policies. This paper aims understand street procedure, based on empirical evidence. Three were studied (Portland, Seattle, Philadelphia) means documentary information, visual inspections, interviews. It special interest unveil how traditional modified adopt these new elements (ROW). Results show longer complex process streets, many disciplines intervene. These results discussed light recent movements trends design.
